As with many professions, the longer you practice it, the more you tend to specialize on those areas where do your best work. The fields of psychotherapy and sex therapy are no different. After 25+ years of counseling and therapy experience I have become a specialist and expert in alternative means of sexual expression. So, what does that mean?
Alternative means of sexual expression are those areas of sexual behavior and sexuality that are considered atypical from what most of our society consider typical. While these types of behavior may be atypical, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t many, many people who engage in them in positive and healthy ways. Often the problem can be for those who enjoy these lifestyles are a struggle with the negative emotions of shame, fear, embarrassment, guilt and self-doubt. These areas are often difficult for many to discuss since even some under-educated therapists in the psychotherapy world would pathologize these behaviors due to their lack of experience.
While sometime people choose to work with me to gain insight and acceptance of their unique desires and behaviors, other times they want to work on anxiety, stress or life transition issues and need a therapist who understands their lifestyle issues without judgment or need to educate their therapist before they can begin to get the help they need. Here are some of the issues where I specialize:
- BDSM Lifestyle
- Open Relationships (swinging, polyamory, designer relationships)
- AB/DL (Age play, Littles, Middles)
